Why You Don't Want To Attract Male Hummingbirds To Your Yard
By BRI AHEARN
An easy way to tell the sex of the hummingbird visiting your feeder is size: Males are smaller than females. It’s important to distinguish between them as males can be aggressive.
Despite being so small, male hummingbirds are very territorial and aggressively defend their food sources from intruders, often driving other hummingbirds away from your feeder.
The most common North American species, the rufous hummingbird, is particularly aggressive (including the female) and will attack birds of any size as well as other animals.
To prevent other hummingbirds from being driven away, reduce competition by distributing several additional feeders around your yard but at a distance from your existing feeder.
