When Is The Best Time To Apply Weed And Feed?
By DANIEL FEININGER
Weed and feed is a common lawn chemical that is used widely across suburban America. Home and garden owners rely on the application of these types of products to ensure that their lawn is always healthy and green throughout the year, but it's all about knowing the right time to apply it.
Earth Works reports that a good rule of thumb is to wait until the grass begins to perk up and regain a vibrant green shade. This results in a longer wait time, extending into the spring, but will allow for the full effect of your fertilizer and weed killer mix.
Take your cue from the average temperature reports as the weather begins to take a turn towards the typical springtime thaw, and each year will require its own common-sense approach. You don’t want to add the chemicals too early, as the nitrogen content in the fertilizer will help propel weed growth rather than stamp it out.
You also need to know whether it is best to use pre-emergent or post-emergent weed and feed, as the former is used in colder months to prepare for the warmer ones, and the latter is used in the spring. If you live in an area with less than optimal soil quality, you may need to apply them both, so it’s best to research the conditions and grass where you live and find a weed killer specifically tailored to your grass.
