What To Consider Before Replacing
Your Toilet's Wax Ring
By RON BAKER
Wax rings seal toilets to the floor, preventing water and gas leaks. Any toilet removal or reinstall requires a new ring, making proper installation key to its effectiveness.
When installing a toilet, lower it straight onto the wax ring in one shot to avoid damaging the seal. Minor adjustments are okay, but avoid rocking the toilet to prevent damage.
Buy the correct size ring for your drain line — usually 3 or 4 inches. Also, avoid stacking multiple rings, as they won’t seal properly to each other and will likely create leaks.
Use plastic toilet horns to help direct flushed water and replacement anchor bolts for durability. For regular and small gaps between toilet and flange, consider wax-free seals.
