Useful Tips For Keeping Your Peonies Happy And Healthy During Fall
By TRICIA GOSS
Peonies go dormant in the winter, and you need to prepare them for it in the fall by pruning your peony foliage, preparing the soil, dividing the plants, and managing pests.
In the late fall, after your plant's leaves have died, carefully trim the remaining foliage of your peonies back close to ground level, but make sure not to cut into the crown.
Following this pruning, apply a light layer of mulch, taking care not to pile it against the peony crown. Make sure to water it well to help the plant retain moisture.
Fall is also the best time to divide peonies for improved growth. If the weather turns harsh, cover the beds with a protective layer to shield them from extreme conditions.
