Use This Creative Ikea Hack To Make A Chic DIY Wall Sconce
By KRISTY BOWEN
Wall sconces can be a beautiful way to add lighting and liven up a blank wall, and you can create your own low-cost alternative by using Ikea’s Variera plastic bag dispenser.
Priced under $5, the Variera can be turned into a wall sconce for less than $10. Although made for compactly storing plastic bags, its shape is perfect for a lightweight sconce.
First, assemble the Variera and place a remote-controlled battery LED light inside on the bottom of the holder. Then, cut your desired fabric to size to cover its outer area.
Leave a bit of extra fabric so you can turn the edges under for a neater look. Using a hot glue gun, adhere the fabric around the entire holder to complete the shade.
Add fringe or other accents like buttons, beads, and crystals to customize the sconce. Leftover fabric and trim can be used from other projects to reduce waste and costs.
These affordable sconces are great for spaces like short-term rentals and dorms, as they're easy to install and operate without costly electricians, re-wiring, or dangling cords.
