Upgrade Your Concrete Patio On A Budget With This DIY Paint Project
By EZEKIEL MAINA
If your basic concrete patio is looking a little drab, an easy way to elevate it is with concrete paint. With a small outlay and some prep work, you can totally revamp your patio.
First, select a paint color that complements your outdoor decor — epoxy-based or masonry paint is more durable. You’ll need about 1 gallon per 400 square feet of floor space.
You’ll also need 1 gallon of primer per 300 square feet, masking tape, a paint roller, and tray. You can use self-priming concrete paint instead, which is both primer and paint.
Pick a day when rain or extreme temperatures aren’t expected, as these alter drying times. On new concrete, remove any curing compounds with a chemical stripper or floor grinder.
On older floors, clean thoroughly, bleach stubborn mold, and remove any grease spots with a degreaser. Then, patch up chips or cracks with masonry concrete crack filler.
Protect adjacent areas with masking tape, then apply the primer, and let it dry for 30 minutes. Next, apply your paint, let it dry for at least four hours, and add a clear sealant.
