Tips & Tricks To Build A Nest Box Hummingbirds Can Enjoy
By A. R. HOPKINS
As hummingbirds aren’t cavity nesters, they won't settle into your birdhouse unless it’s built with a high, open platform and materials that simulate their treetop cup nests.
Your hummingbird nester should resemble a birdhouse without any front or side walls. You'll need some scrap wood, some small twigs or dowels, nails, a drill, and wood glue.
Use a wood board about 9 inches tall and 4 inches wide for the back. To the bottom of this, attach another board about 10 inches long and 4 inches wide for the nesting platform.
Drill a small hole in the center of this board for drainage, then attach two small twigs or dowels just over an inch apart to support both sides of the hummingbird’s nest.
Finally, cut two flat wood planks to size and secure them with wood glue and nails to create an A-frame roof that hangs over about ⅓ of the nesting platform.
Hang your nester at least 10 feet off the ground in a covered area protected from wind, rain, and predator birds, like under your roof, on the side of a tree trunk, or on a pole.
