Tips & Tricks For Taking Advantage Of End-Of-Season Plant Sales
By TERI TRACY
As the gardening season winds down, end-of-season plant sales at big box stores and nurseries offer a great opportunity to save money and prepare for the next year.
While these sales often feature perennials that may appear less appealing due to dormancy, careful selection and proper care can help these discounted plants thrive in your garden.
When shopping, choose plants that are free of pests like spider mites, aphids, or mealybugs; have at least 25% healthy foliage; and show no signs of root rot or significant damage.
Once you bring your clearance plants home, remove them from their pots and carefully assess their condition. If everything looks good, water them and place them in a shady spot.
After a few hours, trim any droopy leaves or spent blooms. If the roots are tightly bound, loosen them, cut away any dead or decaying parts, then replant in
Make sure to plant your perennials at least six weeks before the first frost. Otherwise, you can overwinter them in a well-lit shed or garage with occasional watering and pruning.
