Tips For Fertilizing Your Lawn In The Fall (& What
To Avoid)
By CHRISTY RAE AMMONS
Apply your fall fertilizer about a day after a good rain to ensure the soil is moist and capable of soaking in the plant food, but avoid fertilizing when it’s forecasted to rain.
Heavy rain can wash the fertilizer away, preventing your turf from reaping the benefits. Also, not raking up the leaves on your lawn blocks the fertilizer from reaching the roots.
Before fertilizing, test the soil to see what nutrients your grass lacks, and mow your lawn. Keep your fertilizer only on the grass and clean up any that spills onto your concrete.
Don’t apply fertilizer after the first frost. Once the ground starts to harden, your grass will slow down its growth and won't be able to absorb the nutrients you've provided.
