Crafty squirrels somehow manage to get past every device devised to stop them from raiding your bird feeders; however, this brilliant DIY feeder design will keep them out for good.
YouTuber Chris Notap’s solution was to build the walls of his bird feeder with rings that are big enough to admit birds but not squirrels — similar to how caged suet feeders work.
You’ll need an 8-foot galvanized steel chain-link fence post for about $30 from Home Depot, a tube of all-purpose 100% silicone sealant to glue the rings, and some scrap materials.
Use a manual pipe cutter or a tail pipe cutter, which cuts faster, to slice the post into 140 rings. Glue these rings together to make two 5x5 ring walls and two 9x5 ring walls.
Chris Notap’s video demonstrates how to construct the floor and roof, secure everything with nuts and bolts, and then mount your squirrel-proof feeder to a post in your yard.
