Many people know that citronella and basil repel mosquitoes, but there’s another plant, pennyroyal, whose scent and oil are a potent force against these pesky insects.
Part of the mint family, pennyroyal is a dual-action herb: Its odor is off-putting to mosquitoes, while its oil acts as a larvicide, targeting the insects’ young larvae stages.
Plant the sprawling herb in your garden to reap its benefits. The leaves can be rubbed on your skin or clothing, burned, or mixed with essential oils to create a spray or body oil.
Since pennyroyal oil is highly toxic if ingested, keep it away from children, pregnant women, and pets. Wash your hands thoroughly after handling it to avoid
any contamination.
