The Unexpected Item You Can Use To Keep Silver From Tarnishing
By PASAN PERERA
Sterling silver tarnishes when exposed to sulfur-containing gases in the air, generating a coating of compound copper sulfide, and even if you have pure silver, this coating can ruin your metal. It’s essential to take care of silver items so they don’t tarnish, and luckily, all you have to do is follow this simple hack.
Storing your silverware with chalk keeps your items looking good as new as the chalk absorbs moisture and prevents it from gathering in your storage box or case. Wrap some chalk with a cheesecloth and place it with your silver in a dry space like a drawer or cabinet, and avoid hot or humid environments that can ruin your silver.
Avoid storing silver in places that include plastic or rubber, and make sure chemicals or cosmetic products don’t come in contact with silver items. To remove tarnish, you can use laundry detergent, cornstarch, ketchup, hand sanitizer, window cleaner, or hair conditioner to restore your silver.
