The Sweet Smelling Garden Favorite That Keeps Pests Off Citrus Trees
By RACHEL CRAFT
Companion planting is the practice of growing different plant species near each other, and lavender and fruit trees are two ideal pairings that will benefit your garden.
Lavender is a perennial shrub that produces soft, fragrant purple blooms. Its sweet smell drives away pests, like flies and moths, and invites helpful pollinators to fruit trees.
Both lavender and fruit trees have similar environmental needs, as they should both be watered heavily every week or two and then allowed to dry out before the next watering.
When you plant lavender under a fruit tree, the tree's foliage protects the lavender from getting waterlogged. Meanwhile, lavender attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Regular pruning stimulates your lavender bush to produce fragrant flowers. Mulch it every fall to help it survive the winter and continue protecting your
fruit tree.
