The Secret Meaning Behind A Home With A Red Porch Light
By CHRISTY RAE AMMONS
Depending on the time of year, a red porch light may signal a special meaning. For instance, February is when the American Heart Association (AHA) focuses on heart disease.
Go Red for Women, a branch of the AHA, teaches about cardiovascular health in women, and their mission stems from the misinformation created by the field’s original focus on men.
Though a red dress is the official symbol for the movement, people are also encouraged to change their porch lights to red to show support to women and their heart health.
A red light can also show support for firefighters. May 4 is International Firefighters' Day, which started in 1999 after five people died while battling a wildfire in Australia.
The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation encourages people to light their porch red, take pictures, and spread them on social media with the hashtag #Shine4Firefighters.
