The Popular Shrub That Thrives Alongside A Japanese Maple Tree
By SANDY BAKER
When you want to add color and vibrancy to your garden and landscapes, consider the benefits of incorporating beautiful azaleas next to a Japanese maple (Acer palmatum).
Azaleas and Japanese maples need the same basic conditions to thrive, including sunlight, moisture, and nutrients, making them excellent companion plants.
Like the Japanese maple, most azaleas benefit from acidic soil, which can be achieved by adding organic matter. Ensure the soil is also well drained to support their root growth.
Both plants do not thrive in full sun for long periods and prefer partial shade. Azaleas, in particular, tend to spread out more in the shade, as their branches seek sunlight.
Each plant can be grown from seedlings or plant clippings. Keep the soil moist but not oversaturated, and prune your Japanese maple to keep it healthy and control its growth.
Azaleas are more prone to pest infestations, especially whiteflies, but natural insecticide works well — so don’t be afraid to add more Azaleas to your Japanese maple flower bed.
