The Flowering Bush That Birds Will Flock To Your Yard For
By SANDY BAKER
To attract birds to your garden, consider growing lilac, a flowering shrub that creates a valuable habitat for your feathered friends and supports their needs on an ongoing basis.
While you’re enjoying their vibrant color and sweet fragrance, lilacs are also providing shelter for many bird species. You might see blue jays tucked in them or a robin’s nest.
Their branches are strong enough to support these larger birds, and the insects that lilacs encourage provide a good food source for those birds that munch on them.
Plant lilacs in an open area, as they need room to grow in all directions and benefit from full sun. The common lilac can grow as tall as 20 feet, with pastel colors like purple.
For the best blooms that bring birds in, ensure the soil is well drained and moist. Add organic material or a low-nitrogen, high-phosphate fertilizer to support the shrub’s growth.
