The Biggest Problem With Using Slate Tile On A Patio
By KATE NICHOLSON
Slate tile is a popular choice for patio paving. However, this natural stone is porous in nature and readily absorbs water, which can lead to staining and discoloration over time.
Specifically, acid rain and hard water can damage the tiles' appearance, with the latter causing a buildup of efflorescence — a white, powdery residue on the slate's surface.
Additionally, the tiles are susceptible to stains from discolored water, which can occur when rainwater mixes with leaves in gutter systems and spills onto the patio.
Moreover, salt- or chemical-filled water from ponds and swimming pools, as well as residual water left on the tile after mopping, can also result in persistent, unsightly stains.
