Carefully measure and clean your counter before cutting the contact paper to size and applying it to the surface. Or, for a bold color change, sand and paint the surface material.
Alternatively, you can pick up a DIY epoxy kit from Home Depot to create a smooth, glossy finish. This can be tricky for beginners, resulting in air bubbles and other mistakes.
