Food For Hummingbirds
(& What You Should Never Feed Them)
By ETHAN HARRISON SMITH
There are other foods besides nectar that you can feed the hummingbirds visiting your yard. For example, a hummingbird's diet generally consists of plenty of insects like aphids.
You can place a rotting fruit in a dish or compost pile in your yard to attract small insects and fruit flies that hummingbirds can feed on, although be wary of the bacteria.
You can also provide fresh, ripe, juicy fruits to hummingbirds since they like the high sugar content. However, feed them in moderation because it can lead to digestive issues.
There are certain foods you should completely avoid such as bread, chips, and crackers because they don’t provide good nutrition, and hummingbirds cannot digest starchy food well.
