The Best Advice When Planting Roses In Pots
By JENNY TINDER
When planting roses in pots, it's crucial to select varieties that are specifically suitable for container gardening, such as compact or patio roses.
Ensure your pot is large enough for the plant's mature size — at least 15 inches wide — with adequate drainage holes to prevent waterlogging and root rot.
The soil should be a well-draining potting mix specifically formulated for roses, and you can enrich it with compost for added nutrients.
After planting, water the rose thoroughly, maintaining a consistently moist but not saturated soil. Container roses may require more frequent watering than those in the ground.
Place the pot in a location that receives ample sunlight; use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer; and regularly prune the plant for optimal growth.
In cooler climates, insulate your pots by nestling them into slightly larger containers and packing peat moss or mulch between the pots.
