The Beautiful Bright Red Flower Hummingbirds Adore
By KOURTNEY BORMAN
Scarlet sage, or Salvia coccinea, attracts hummingbirds with its bright red tubular flowers, which are perfectly shaped for their long, thin beaks, allowing them to feed with ease.
It grows 2 to 4 feet high and spreads 1 to 2 ½ feet wide, blooming from early summer until frost and providing a constant source of nectar that hummingbirds
find irresistible.
Native to Mexico, this plant also thrives in the Southeastern U.S. It is hardy in zones 9 and 10, reseeds easily in zones 6 through 8, and grows as an annual in cooler regions.
This beauty flourishes in full sun to partial shade and prefers sandy, fertile soil, though it can tolerate clay if the soil drains well. Once mature, it can even
tolerate drought.
Scarlet sage is ideal for walkways, coastal areas, and cottage gardens. It also works well in containers when paired with pollinator-friendly plants like cupheas and petunias.
