The Backyard DIY That Adds Ultimate Comfort And Relaxation
By KRISTY BOWEN
A daybed is the perfect choice to improve your backyard space. To create one, you’ll need inexpensive wood, basic tools, fasteners, a waterproof mattress, and a waterproof cover.
Start with four 4x4-inch wood posts to serve as corner supports from top to bottom. Measure the length and width of your mattress to determine how far apart they will need to be.
Create supports to hold them together at the ends of the bed with 2x4s and pocket screws. Attach another 2x4 near the top of the frame for support and as a framework for the cover.
The mattress supports are made from two 2x4s with a 1x2 screwed in along their length to form a cleat for the bed slats, which are made from 1x6 boards to provide a mattress base.
Use L-brackets at the seams and caps at the top, with a 1x6 apron in front to cover the side of the mattress. Attach back slats to the posts on one side or above to make a pergola.
Now, stain and varnish the frame or paint it. Install the mattress, add waterproof cushions, and fabric curtains or mesh along the top using grommets, hooks, or a staple gun.
