Take Caution Before Planting This Flower Hummingbirds Adore
By KRISTEEN CHERNEY
Hollyhock (Alcea rosea) is an easy-to-grow perennial known for its nectar-rich, brightly colored flowers, especially red, that can attract flocks of hummingbirds to your garden.
However, hollyhock is considered an invasive species in some regions, as it reseeds easily and spreads uncontrollably. If not managed properly, it can quickly overrun your garden.
To prevent this issue, consider harvesting some of the seeds by pruning away the old growth before the flowers fall and the wind disperses them across
the yard.
Alternatively, you can grow other plants hummingbirds are drawn to, such as bee balm, columbine, petunia, phlox, zinnia, or hibiscus, which is closer to hollyhock in appearance.
