If you’re tired of walking into a messy foyer or hunting for essential items like keys, you can easily repurpose an old chess set into a unique piece of functional wall art.
To replicate artist Peter Marigold's "Chess Board Coat Hook," you’ll need a chessboard, power drill, and screws. If you don't have a chessboard, visit your local thrift store.
First, use painter’s tape to mark on the squares where you want each piece to go. Drill holes through the board, then pilot holes in the chess pieces, and attach them with screws.
Instead of screws, you can also use Gorilla Glue ($10 on Amazon), but wait 24 hours for it to dry. Facing the knights upward works better as a hook due to its horse muzzle shape.
Attach the board to the wall with two sawtooth hooks, one on either side, and screw these into the back of the board with a screwdriver. Amazon sells 30 sawtooth hooks for $4.
Wooden chess boards are usually two-tone wood grain, but you can paint the squares any color you like. Now, you have a custom-made place to hang hats, scarves, keys, and more.
