Repurpose Old Mattress Springs To DIY A Garden Trellis
By LINDSAY DONALDSON
Instead of dumping your old mattress in a landfill, you can save money by repurposing its springs as a heavy-duty garden trellis that’s able to support all kinds of vining plants.
TikToker @ashs.backyardgarden shared how to disassemble an old mattress and install the wire framework vertically as a ready-to-use trellis with lots of places for vines to grip.
If you don’t have a spare old mattress, you can get one for little to no cost on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. Then, strip off all soft material to reveal its metal skeleton.
Next, sink two to four metal fencing posts into the soil where you want the trellis to be, and secure your mattress springs vertically to the posts with stainless steel zip ties.
To grow heavier vegetables like winter squash, you might need to build a wooden frame around the mattress springs and attach the frame to the metal fence posts instead.
