Replace An Outdated Medicine Cabinet With A Kitchen Storage Solution
By Nick Polishchuk
With a bit of elbow grease and creative flair, you can refashion a bread box into a one-of-a-kind medicine cabinet in no time, tailor-made to your decor of choice.
As the box already opens, all you need to do is imbue it with a bit of character. You may choose to paint it, or a good cleaning or refinishing might be all that's needed.
If you're lucky and have an olive wood bread box, please don't paint it. Instead, freshen it with a good sanding and new coats of stain and sealant, taking care not to scratch it.
If you have a bamboo bread box, you can either stain it to preserve the natural look or paint it with water-based colors, like acrylic or latex, and paint along the grain.
For steel boxes, be sure to clean them and remove rust. Use an alkyd-based paint for a glossy, scratch-resistant coating; otherwise, acrylic paint will do just fine.
Plastic bread boxes may be a bit more challenging to paint, but acrylic latex generally works well. To paint a more detailed, ornate pattern, use acrylic markers instead.
