Protect Your Hostas From Deer Using Two Different Tricks
By KRISTEEN CHERNEY
Deer can be a nuisance in the garden, especially when feasting on your hostas. Luckily, there are two excellent methods to protect them: physical barriers and non-toxic repellents.
Physical barriers, such as installing an 8-foot fence around your property or a smaller enclosure around the garden, are the most reliable way to keep deer away from your hostas.
Moreover, creating a perimeter of herbs like mint, chives, or catnip, or using prickly plants, can help deter deer, though these strategies are less effective compared to fencing.
The second approach involves using non-toxic repellents. One such solution is mixing three eggs with a gallon of water and applying it to plants every two weeks or after it rains.
Other options include spraying essential oils, such as peppermint, or strategically placing soap or human hair around the plants, though these methods lack scientific support.
