Shade trees provide the perfect cover for your outdoor living space, but it can take decades for them to grow. For a fast-growing shade tree, the basswood is perfect.
The basswood grows two to three feet per year and reaches a mature height of 60 to 80 feet tall or more. They are exceptionally hardy and have a spread of about 40 to 60 feet wide.
It has beautiful, small, fragrant flowers, is the largest shade tree in North America, and blooms from July to August. The heart-shaped leaves are five to seven inches across.
