Plant Basil Near Your Lemon Tree For Unexpected Benefits
By ANNETTE HIRD
Not only does basil thrive in the same climate as lemon trees, but it also helps control pests and attracts pollinators, improving the overall health and yield of the citrus tree.
Aphids are drawn to the scent of lemon trees. These sap-sucking insects feed on tender new growth and produce a sticky residue called honeydew, which, in turn, attracts ants.
Plus, honeydew deposited onto the leaves and stems leads to the development of black sooty mold that hinders photosynthesis and prevents the tree from maturing and ripening lemons.
When you plant basil, either in soil or a container near your lemon tree, its pungent scent masks the tree's aroma, confusing aphids and protecting the tree from potential damage.
Additionally, basil's blooms attract essential pollinators like bees and hoverflies, which are crucial for fertilizing the lemon tree's flowers and enhancing fruit production.
