Places You Might Find Garter Snakes Lurking In Your Yard
By KIM W.S.
Even though garter snakes aren’t dangerous, they could still startle you or bite you if threatened or accidentally stepped on, so you might want to look out for their hiding spots.
Having a pool or bird bath might attract garter snakes since they prefer to live in moist, grassy settings and often gravitate to bodies of water like ponds or streams in the wild.
Garter snakes like to hide among tall grass, debris, decorative rocks, retaining walls, wood piles, logs, or boards and use these places to wait for prey and hide from predators.
They also like to use natural holes in the ground, or those made by other animals like rodents. They hibernate in these holes in the winter and venture out for sun when they can.
