Penstemons Are The Beautiful Fall Flowers Your Garden Is Missing
By A. R. HOPKINS
Penstemon, also known as beardtongue, is a beautiful North American native perennial that adds vibrant color to your garden just as the summer blooms begin
to fade.
The plant boasts bright purple, red, or pink tubular flowers, each featuring a fifth stamen that offers a handy perch for bees and butterflies as they feed on pollen
and nectar.
Penstemon is a hardy plant that thrives in barren, well-draining, low-nutrient soil and needs only occasional deep watering. It prefers full sun, though it can tolerate
some shade.
When planting, leave the top of the root ball exposed rather than covering it with soil. For ongoing care, cover the base with gravel instead of mulch, and fertilize
once a year.
