Keep Weeds From Taking Over Your Garden By Planting This Blue Flower
By LAUREN KRYSTAF
Sometimes the best way to combat weeds is by using another plant to outcompete them. Blue mistflower’s aggressive growth and lovely blue blooms make it the perfect candidate.
Blue mistflower spreads using both seeds and rhizomes, which allow it to easily outcompete many invasive weeds. Plus, its blue blooms will add a lovely pop of color to your yard.
Its seeds and plants can usually be found in shops specializing in North American native species. If you opt to buy seeds, sow them in fall so they can germinate over the winter.
The sun-loving plant will grow up to 3 feet tall — it’s extremely tough, and you can even mow it if you want. Since it prefers moist soil, you may need to water it periodically.
Due to its aggressive spread, be careful not to plant it somewhere it’ll outcompete slower growing flowers. Instead, place it next to plants with similar habits, like bee balm.
