Thanks to a hack shared by Ronda Moffit on TikTok, you don’t have to choose between protection and convenience when it comes to a pest-proof barrier for your garden.

Ordinary tulle, like the kind from a fabric store, is porous enough to allow water, moisture, fresh air, and sunlight to pass through, yet durable enough to deter pests.

In her video, Moffit says that tulle is “the perfect breathable material, [water] goes right through.” She explains that she doesn’t have to remove or adjust it to water plants.

Tulle is a synthetic open netting and can resist pests like birds, squirrels, and rabbits, but is also fine enough to keep moths, grasshoppers, snails, and slugs out of the garden.

To DIY this hack at home, cut hula hoops into halves and secure them against the edges of your garden bed to use as the frame for the tulle.

Ensure that the tulle fabric you purchase is wide enough to drape all the way to the soil, then weigh down the edges of the tulle with bricks or stones.

Use this hack for plants that don’t need pollination to grow and aren’t useful for pollinating insects, like bok choy, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens, and mustard.
