When people think of Joanna Gaines, they think of a modern farmhouse. Not everyone can say they have a farmhouse-inspired collection licensed with Target, Loloi Rugs, and Anthropologie, and the fun thing about Gaines is that she’s a country gal herself, so she knows the ins and outs of a chic modern farmhouse.
One of Gaines’ key factors to a modern farmhouse is keeping the character intact, but that doesn’t mean you can’t freshen up the moldings, built-in cabinetry, or fireplaces. She loves to mix old and new elements together, so she’ll often use recycled existing wood shiplap, black iron, modern lighting pendants, and a black and white color palette.
Gaines typically uses concrete flooring to add a contemporary look in bathrooms and opts for frameless glass showers. She hangs mirrors to create an illusion of a larger space, suspends lighting fixtures in front of mirrors to reflect a warm glow, and she fastens found objects like metal hooks or oversized letters on walls to reflect one’s personality.
