Using coffee grounds as a defense against pesky fungus gnats has shown up on lots of platforms, from forums to blogs, but the jury seems to be out on whether it’s effective.
Though the U.K.-based lawn company Moowy recommends sprinkling used grounds over soil, a number of gardeners share that the process ended up attracting many more fungus gnats.
Knowing a bit about the fungus gnat life cycle may help you decide whether this trick is worth a try. During its 25-day existence, the average female gnat can lay up to 200 eggs.
However, the coffee remedy supposedly targets adult flies. So, it may be better to focus on a remedy that targets the flies' earlier life stages or that fights fungus growth.
