Increase Kitchen Storage Space With A DIY Freestanding Pantry
By NICK POLISHCHUK
Although pantry cabinets present an excellent storage solution, they can be quite expensive. Instead of buying one, create your own custom pantry for under $100.
Before you start, determine your desired height, depth, and width to suit your household’s needs. Consider the items you will be storing in there and the size of your kitchen.
Then, head to the shop to pick out 1-by-2 planks. These will form the vertical and horizontal components of your frame, so be sure to cut them according to your measurements.
Next, assemble the frame starting with the vertical planks before connecting the horizontal ones using pocket screws. After that, use ¾-inch plywood to create the sides and doors.
To save time, determine the exact dimensions of the back, top, side pieces, doors, and shelves before going to a hardware store where a store associate can cut the plywood for you.
Nail the plywood panels to the frame and hang the shelves inside, using the horizontal planks as cleat supports. Finish it off by adding trim or decorative hinges to the doors.
