If You Need To Get Rid Of Your Mattress, Here’s How To Do It
By MARCO ROSSI
If your mattress is finally at the end of its life cycle, it’s time to donate, sell, or recycle it. If you’re ready to discard your mattress, here is the best way to do so.
Mattresses in good shape can be donated or sold. Ensure that the mattress has no structural issues, like deep indents or sagging, in addition to any stains, rips, or funky odors.
If your mattress has no structural issues but looks a tad run-down, vacuum it to remove dust mites, dust, and debris. Spot-clean any minor stains and deodorize with baking soda.
If you deem your mattress good enough to donate, try dropping it off at a local thrift store. You can also sell it or give it away on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, or OfferUp.
If your mattress isn’t in good enough shape to donate or sell, try recycling it. Start by Googling your town or city’s local recycling center and see if they accept mattresses.
Otherwise, call your municipal office’s recycling department to see how they dispose of larger items, or try recycling center databases like Earth 911 or Bye Bye Mattress.
You can also break down your mattress and recycle its individual parts. Look up which parts you can put in your recycling bin and which you need to bring to a specialty facility.
