If you’re struggling to remove a screw stuck from rust, instead of forcing it and maybe snapping it off or damaging the surrounding material, simply use white vinegar to loosen it.
Unlike many harsh chemicals, vinegar is a natural, cost-effective, and versatile cleaning tool that can seep into inaccessible places to break down and remove rust.
To loosen a screw, dip a cotton swab or paper towel in vinegar and dab it on the screw, or pour it straight onto the screw. Leave it for a few minutes until the rust crumbles.
Then, with a well-fitting screwdriver, gently coax the screw out without mangling its head or stripping its thread. If it still won’t budge, apply more vinegar and try again.
Screw manufacturers tout vinegar as a loosening solution, but it may not be able to handle severe corrosion or strong bonding agents. Its acidity can also damage certain materials.
