How To Use The Back To Eden Method To Help Your Garden Thrive
By MICHAEL ALEXANDER UCCELLO
"Back to Eden" may sound mystical, but it's a gardening method revolutionizing plant cultivation. It mimics nature's processes to create a thriving and self-sustaining garden.
Organic Mulch
At the core of Back to Eden is organic mulch — wood chips, leaves, and compost. As the mulch decomposes, it enriches the soil with essential nutrients.
Regular replenishing ensures continual soil rejuvenation, reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers and fostering a healthy environment for beneficial organisms.
Crafting Your Own
Select a sunny location, covering the area with newspaper to prevent weed growth. Then, layer three to four inches of mulch over three to four inches of compost.
The mulch acts as an insulator, preventing rapid soil moisture evaporation. The soil from organic mulch boosts plant growth, reducing the risk of soil-borne diseases.
Planting Seeds
After acquiring your seeds, make a straight line through the soil with your rake by tying a rope to two stakes on opposite sides of your garden.
Move the mulch to the side, dig a hole, and place your seeds in the soil. Add more mulch as it breaks down over time to keep the soil healthy and productive.
