A mattress topper is an extra layer that goes on top of your mattress but underneath your bed sheets and provides extra comfort with varying plushness, thickness, and size.
Some mattress toppers are constructed like a fitted sheet, but most are made as a sheet with elastic straps at the corners to tuck under the mattress for a secure fit.
Not only can mattress toppers make a firm mattress feel less rigid and a thin one thicker, but they also are washable and protect your mattress from marks and stains.
A topper helps with sagging if it’s been used since the mattress was new, but if your mattress is more than seven years old and uneven, you're probably past the point of saving it.
Other ways toppers are handy are by making special mattresses, like for back pain, feel softer without negating what you bought them for, and by adding plushness to your sofa beds.
