How To Use A Dollar Bill To Test Your Fridge's Efficiency
By DANIELLE RAMOS-SULLIVAN
If you suspect that your fridge has a cooling issue, you can use a dollar bill to inspect its gasket, which is the elastic rubber lining the refrigerator doors.
To assess the gasket's efficiency, take a crisp dollar bill and place it at the midpoint of the door seal so that half of it hangs out and is firmly held when the door is closed.
Pull the dollar out slowly; if you can pull the bill out without any resistance, your seal isn't doing its job of protecting the internal temperature of the fridge.
Repeat this dollar bill test at various points along the top, bottom, and sides of the gaskets on both your fridge and freezer doors.
If cleaning the gasket doesn't improve the result, you may need to replace it. Perform the dollar bill test annually on your fridge or whenever you notice temperature fluctuations.
