How To Use A Bar Of Soap To Keep Deer Out Of The Garden
By BECCA EVANS
Deers have sensitive noses and use their sense of smell to protect themselves. When something, like the smell of soap, interferes with that ability, they leave the area.
Irish Spring soap has a strong scent and contains animal fat, also known as tallow, which studies show is better at getting deer away than soaps with plant-based fats.
Grate or thinly slice bars of Irish Spring or a similar scented, tallow-based bar of soap, and scatter the pieces around the plants you want to defend.
Replace the shavings every week, after rainfall, or on a mainly sunny day. Irish Spring is non-toxic, so you don't have to worry about hurting plants or other creatures.
You can also use a whole bar of soap, putting it about four feet off the ground, low enough for the deer to smell it. When it starts to lose its scent, shave off the outer layer.
