Hummingbirds are highly adept at building nests that camouflage with their surroundings so much so that spotting their nesting site requires patience and knowing what to look for.
Watching their flight patterns in areas close to flowers that hummingbirds love may help you locate their nests. Pay close attention to any irregularities you see in branches, too.
These small fliers typically choose to build nests at the edge of a yard for safety or near water sources that keep the area cool. Look for dense bushes with good foliage coverage.
The nest’s outside will be camouflaged with greenish-gray lichens, but the inside will be insulated with softer plant materials like dandelion. Use binoculars for a closer look.
If you do find a nest in your yard, don't ever touch it — it's actually illegal to do so. It’s best to enjoy watching the hummingbird family from afar and not spooking the mom.
