How To Fix Your Squeaky Garage Door (And When To Call For Help)
By MORGAN MCCRORY
A noisy garage door can ruin anyone’s day, and while your first instinct might be to call in a professional, this might be a DIY project you could do yourself.
The type of sounds your garage door makes as it moves is the first indicator as to whether you should attempt to fix the repairs yourself.
Every sound shows a specific issue. A squeaky sound indicates that a moving part needs oil, whereas a rattling sound suggests that nuts and bolts are loose.
Open and close the door several times while inside and outside your garage to help determine what’s making the sound before you start any repairs.
Completely cut off any electricity to
the doors to
ensure nothing unintentionally moves while you’re working. Manual doors need to be locked into place if raised in any way.
Use either silicone or lithium-based lubricant on all rollers, tracks, hinges, and springs, as well as all around the door frame and panels if oil is the issue.
Tighten the loose bolts or screws with a wrench or screwdriver; be sure not to over-tighten these parts, since doing so can cause further damage by stripping the holes.
If the problem persists, it could indicate that parts need to be replaced or there is a
larger issue, like unbalanced doors or a faulty motor, that will require a professional’s help.
