You’ll need a 5-gallon bucket, a submersible pump (buy one on Amazon or rent one from Home Depot), 3 or 4 gallons of white distilled vinegar, two rubber hoses, and towels.
To prevent electrical shocks or potential gas leaks, turn off the gas by setting the valve in the perpendicular position, then switch off the electricity and unplug the cord.
Underneath the water heater you’ll find a blue handle, which is for the cold water inlet, and a red handle for the hot water outlet. Close both to shut off the water.
To release the water stored in the water heater, place the 5-gallon bucket under it, unscrew the service port caps, then open the blue and red flushing valves.
The pre-filter sits at the bottom of your unit or along the water supply line. Remove it carefully, clean off any buildup with a toothbrush, then replace it securely.
