How To Correctly Use Hydrogen Peroxide To Clean & Remove Black Mold
By BRI AHEARN
A 2013 study in The Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene found that hydrogen peroxide can prevent black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) growth and spore germination.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, it’s effective on hard surfaces of under 3 feet by 3 feet. For a larger job, you’ll need to call in a mold removal professional.
Before treating black mold, stop the moisture source (e.g., leaky pipe) attracting it. Ensure the room is well-ventilated, and wear gloves and goggles to block contact with spores.
Then, pour 3% hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle, and liberally spray the mold patch. The antiseptic will begin bubbling, which breaks down the fungi's protein and DNA.
When the bubbles subside, scrub with a cloth or brush until the mold is gone. Once the area is dry, run an air purifier to remove airborne spores and remove and wash your clothing.
