How Often You Should Really Be Sealing Butcher Block Countertops
By MARCO ROSSI
Butcher block countertops are valued for their durability and can last up to 20 years with proper care, but monthly sealing is essential to maintain their condition and appearance.
This regular maintenance helps prevent the wood from cracking or splintering by creating a barrier against food and liquid absorption, ensuring the countertops remain pristine.
However, the countertops may require more frequent resealing if exposed to extreme temperatures or located in a kitchen with air conditioning vents, as both can dry out the wood.
Countertops near stovetops may lose their sheen more quickly from heat. In such cases, it's advisable to reseal whenever the wood begins to look dehydrated or lose its luster.
To seal your countertop, spread food-grade mineral oil evenly across the surface. Allow it to sit for anywhere from 15 minutes to a day, and then wipe off the excess.
