How And When To Divide Mums To Keep Them Happy And Healthy
By PEG ALOI
Potted mums last longer when planted as a colorful addition to a late-season garden bed. Since they increase in size each year, the plant's clumps need to be divided periodically.
The best time to divide your mums is in the fall. Wait until the clumps reach at least six inches wide before divvying them up across your garden with plenty of sunlight.
Start the dividing process once your mums start to turn brown and slow their growth. Check the forecast for any imminent frost, as the buds need to adjust before the soil freezes.
To divide, use a shovel to cut through to the roots and remove a section of the plant. You can dig the entire clump, break it into parts, and replant the sections.
Before replanting, clean up any debris, dead stems, or leaves from around your mum plant. Prepare the new spot with fresh soil or compost, pat down firmly, and water the mums.
Consider your mums' growth patterns and colors when choosing where to place them. They will need at least five hours of direct sunlight a day to grow well.
