How A Pool Noodle Can Seal A Window (Even With An Extension Cord)
By RON BAKER
Homes never seem to have outdoor electrical outlets where you need them, and running an extension cord out a window invites insects while heating or air conditioning the outside.
That’s why YouTube disaster preparedness expert J.R. uses a pool noodle to get an extension cord out a window to a backyard, deck, or treehouse without leaving the window open.
He cuts a pool noodle to fit the window, allowing for a little overlap on the sides. Then, he cuts a channel in the pool noodle for the extension cord to prevent gaps.
J.R. uses the hack to run power into his home from a portable gas-powered generator, meaning the trick works in either direction. The noodle lets the cord through without abrasion.
However, to keep your home safe from intruders, you’ll need a window restrictor, Charley bar, or some other means to let the window close firmly against the noodle and stay put.
The insulating material of the noodles won't sacrifice your window's ability to keep the indoors cool or warm. Use an extension cord rated for outdoor use, and don’t overload it.
