HGTV's Mike Holmes Warns Not To Make This Flooring Mistake
By KRISTY BOWEN
HGTV host Mike Holmes of "Holmes Family Rescue" took to Instagram to share why installing new tile over old tile is a terrible idea and can lead to structural damage.
"If your home was built to minimum code, it's not built to carry that much weight," said Holmes. Thus, leaving old tile in place can trigger expensive problems, including rot.
Holmes warns that keeping old tile eliminates a good chance to properly look at what lies beneath, leaving your home vulnerable to sagging, moisture, and deterioration.
Fully removing the bottom layer of tile before laying the new materials is always the best option, so you can catch problems in the subflooring and easily fix them.
